Tips & tricks

Get more out of HushHush.

Small habits that make the app faster to use and harder to defeat.

Eight habits

Connect two channels, not one

Sign in to two of Telegram, Matrix and email inside HushHush. Contacts auto-connect over whichever channel you both have, so two keeps delivery automatic with almost everyone you pair with.

Compare the safety number when you pair

While you are still face to face, open the contact and compare the safety number on both phones. If it ever changes later, re-pair in person before you trust the chat again.

Set the duress password before you need it

Choose decoy or wipe in Settings, then practise entering it once so the decoy looks lived-in. A decoy you have never opened is an empty room.

Shorten the auto-lock on risky days

Thirty seconds at a border or a protest, thirty minutes at home. The timer is in Settings and takes effect immediately.

Biometrics for speed, a long password for strength

Face ID or a fingerprint gets you in quickly, but the password is what the key is derived from. Make it long, keep it offline, and remember there is no reset.

Paste from anywhere

Copy the whole block of ciphertext from any app, open that contact's chat in HushHush, and tap Paste. If the app split a long message, copy every part.

Keep notes in your HushHush

The chat with yourself encrypts whatever you type and sends nothing anywhere. Door codes, addresses, the number you were told not to write down.

Lock before you hand your phone over

Lock HushHush from the chat list before passing your phone to anyone, even for a photo. The decoy and the lockout only help once it is locked.
